William “Billy Ray” Ray Compton, 82, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Gordon Hospice House. He was born on August 1, 1936 in Iredell County to the late Ray and Fannie Troutman Compton.
William was a graduate of Statesville High School Class of 1954 and was married in 1960 to Tommie Elaine Stafford Compton. They shared 58 years of marriage before his passing. William retired from Hunt Manufacturing after 4o plus years of service as a maintenance mechanic. He was a life time member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir for many years and helped with the Boy Scout Troop. William liked music, travelling to different places, and loved his wife’s cooking. He enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren along with visiting with former classmates.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty C. Harrington and an infant brother, Bobby Compton
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Tommie, of the home; a son, Thomas Compton (Leanna) of Statesville; a daughter, Maria Warren (Jerrel) of Gaffney, SC; grandchildren, JJ (Ashley), Aaron, Marianna, Rayanna, Joshua, Nicole, and Amber; great grandchildren, Morgan, Emily, Grayson, Bryson, and Mason; and one sister, Sarah Compton
Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon, October 1, 2018 at St. Johns Lutheran Church with Pastor Ernest Sheldon officiating. The family will visit with friends at the church prior to the service from 11:00 until 11:45 am. A private family burial will be at a later date.
