Wanda Dickens Phelps, 86, formerly of Statesville, NC, passed away on Wednesday, June 22 at Roxboro Nursing Center in Roxboro, NC. Mrs. Phelps was born on December 31, 1924 in High Point, NC, and was the daughter of the late Robert and Ida Davis Dickens. She was a graduate of Troutman High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. On May 2, 1947, she was married to Charles E. Phelps, who preceded her in death in 1984. � Mrs. Phelps worked as a registered nurse at Iredell Memorial Hospital for over 25 years, retiring in 1994. She was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was named Lay Person of the Year in 2002. During retirement, she participated in a wide range of volunteer activities, including the reading program at Northview Elementary, Meals on Wheels, and American Red Cross blood drives. She enjoyed sewing, playing bridge, and travel which included 10 ElderHostel programs. She is survived by two daughters, Cathy Kennington (Sam) of Hurdle Mills, NC, and Laura Phelps (Jim Horney) of Alexandria, VA; three grandchildren, Ellen Thompson Morgan (Allan), Mary Lacy Kennington Johnson (Jody) and Robert Kennington (Jody); and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are four of her siblings, Norma Sherrill of Winston Salem, Ruth Pittman of Thomasville, Kenneth Dickens of High Point and Robert Dickens of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Wallace Dickens and Charles Dickens. Following a private burial at Oakwood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 2 pm at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. After the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, 825 Wesley Drive, Statesville, NC 28677 or to a charitable organization of your choice.
