Mrs. Tommie Elaine Stafford Compton, 77, of Statesville, died Friday, January 4, 2019 at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Compton was born in Iredell County on December 10, 1941 and was the daughter of the late Thomas Milton Stafford and Myrtle Ellis Stafford. She was a graduate of Statesville High School and in 1960 she married William “Billy Ray” Compton and together they shared 57 years of marriage before his passing on September 27, 2018.
Mrs. Compton was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served as church secretary for nine and a half years. She was also a self-employed child care provider.
Mrs. Compton loved cooking and baking and was well known for her chicken and dumplings and pound cakes. Her other hobbies included traveling, camping, and playing cards. She also had a special place in her heart for her pets and all animals. Mrs. Compton along with her husband were leaders in the Lucky Leaf 4-H Club. She also loved her church and church family, but nothing compared to the love she had for family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Fox and Bobbie Evans.
Left to cherish her memory is a son, Thomas Compton (Leanna) of Statesville; a daughter, Maria Warren (Jerrel) of Gaffney, SC; grandchildren, JJ (Ashley), Aaron, Marianna, Rayanna, Joshua, Nicole, and Amber; great grandchildren, Morgan, Emily, Grayson, Bryson, and Mason; She is also survived by two brothers, Danny Stafford (Linda) of Statesville and Carroll Cash (Helen) of Summerville, SC. Tommie and Billy Ray were both blessed with a dear friend and neighbor, one of God’s most faithful servants, Howard Englebert. The family will be forever grateful for his love and friendship.
A memorial service honoring the life of Tommie Compton will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Ernie Sheldon officiating. The family will visit with friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church. Burial of ashes for both Tommie and Billy Ray will take place immediately following the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
