Mrs. Sue Cook Benfield, 75, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012, at the Gordon Hospice House. Born in Iredell County on June 27, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sylvester Cook and Annie Sue Brawley Cook. Sue was a graduate of Celeste Henkel High School and on March 15, 1952 was married to J.D. Benfield, who survives. For a number of years she was a sales account executive with Radio Station WFMX in Statesville and also had a live shift on the radio. Sue loved animals, working on the outside and with her flowers and was especially known for growing African violets. She was a member of Broad Street Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Allen Benfield, and a brother, John Howard Cook and his wife, Sandy Cook and brother-in-law, Wayne Yelton. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, J.D. Benfield, a daughter, Donna B. Maness (Steve) of Statesville, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one brother, Glenn T. Cook (Pat) of Jacksonville, FL and one sister, Patricia C. Yelton of Statesville. The family will visit with friends on Friday evening 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral Home. A service to celebrate her life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Broad Street Church of Christ. Minister Steve Short will officiate and burial will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625, Broad Street Church of Christ, 433 E. Broad St., Statesville, NC 28677 or to the Iredell County Humane Society. The family would like to thank Dr. Ruby Grimm, Dr. Naim Bouhussein, Dr. Henry Walters, The Gordon Hospice and the Staff on the fourth floor at Iredell Memorial Hospital for their love and care of Sue when she was with them.
