Clyde Luther Johnson, Sr., 81, of Statesville, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Iredell County on November 23, 1932 to the late Ralph Johnson and Elsie Mayberry Moose. Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Iredell County Schools and served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Ida Sue Huie Johnson on July 20, 1958 and they enjoyed over 54 years of marriage before her passing on May 5, 2013. He continued his education at Davidson Community College and the Southern Police Institute, University of Louisville where he earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. He was a retired officer with the City of Statesville Police Department following 33 years of service and was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves for 30 years. After his retirement from the Statesville Police Department, he worked for Wal-Mart for 15 years. He was a member of Statesville Friends Church and he also attended Western Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Mr. Johnson enjoyed fixing things, spending time with his grandkids, photography, gardening, and remembering historic events with pictures out of the past. He enjoyed having breakfast on Thursdays with a group of retired law enforcement at Corrine's Caf� in Mooresville. In addition to his wife, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a brother, Brady H. Johnson and a sister, Lillian Louise Johnson. Mr. Johnson is survived by a son, Dr. Clyde Luther Johnson Jr. (Susan) of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Susan Kim Mandigo (Brian), of Statesville, NC; two grandsons, Nicholas Allen Coombes (Brandy) of Statesville and Drew Johnson Coombes (Veronica) of Wilmington, NC; five granddaughters, Autumn Coombes Mahaffey (Michael) of Union Grove, NC, Lacy Mandigo of Statesville, NC, Shelby Hayes, April Hayes, and Jamie Hayes, all of Richmond, Va. He is further survived by two brothers, Harold C. Johnson, and C.O. "Jap" Johnson (Carol), a great grandson, Lucas Coombes; and a great granddaughter, Alyssa Coombes, all of Statesville. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be 1:00PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Winthrop Friends Meeting with Rev. Harold Salmons and Rev. Skip Cartin officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday evening, January 10, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be members of the Statesville Police Department.
