Mr. Jerry Carl Chambers, Sr., 79, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012 at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Chambers was born August 6, 1932 in Iredell County and was the son of the late William Carl Chambers and Hallie Stack Chambers. He was a graduate of Statesville High School Class of 1951 and Kings Business College. While at Statesville, he was known as a star in basketball, football and baseball and was the captain of the Conference Championship Basketball Team. On February 10, 1951, Mr. Chambers married Bettie Buchanan Chambers, who survives. At an early age, he worked with his father, W.C. Chambers at Diamond Hill Coal Co. but he decided to go into business for himself. First he opened the Chambers Launderette, which he ran for nineteen years. In 1956 he started Chambers Well Drilling Co. As his sons grew up and worked with him, he changed the name to Chambers and Sons, Inc. They have drilled water wells over Iredell County for more than 50 years. In 1972, he started selling utility buildings. In the next 40 years they sold and delivered thousands. Along with his parents, Mr. Chambers was also preceded in death by five brothers, Mal, Henry, Ross, Ken and George Chambers and one sister, Ila Chambers Gaither. In addition to his wife, Bettie B. Chambers, of the home, he is also survived by two sons, Jerry Carl Chambers, Jr. (Elizabeth) and Steven Mark Chambers (Deena), both of Statesville. He is further survived by two granddaughters, Mindy Chambers Farag (Andy) of Charleston, SC and Caron Chambers of Statesville along with one grandson, Jay Chambers of Raleigh, NC. several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Chambers will be conducted 3:00 pm Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Michaeel Gehring officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jay Chambers, George Chambers, Jr, Buddy and David Gaither, Mike Chambers, Albert "Grip" Edgerton and Rob Chambers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Statesville High School Class of '51. Bobby and Tommy Stack along with J.K. Chambers will also serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will visit with friends Saturday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street UMC Capital Campaign or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, N.C. 28625.
