Shirley Grey Alexander Johnson, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 7. Shirley was the daughter of the late K.C. Alexander and Nettie Ingram Alexander of Stony Point, N.C..
She was a guard and captain of the Stony Point Pointers basketball team and was named Alexander County’s annual Apple Festival Queen. After graduating high school, Shirley studied radiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education and went on to become Chief of X-Ray at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Margaret Johnson McHugh, son-in-law Josh McHugh and grandchildren Joshua Finn McHugh and Vivian McHugh of San Francisco, CA; her son Ligon Johnson and daughter-in-law Emily Johnson of Los Angeles, CA; her brothers Jim Alexander and Tommy Alexander; her sisters Nancy Alexander Milstead and Peggy Alexander Brendle; her nieces Paige Alexander Fox and Anna Alexander Huff; her nephews Ron Alexander, Tim Alexander, Joel Milstead and Michael Milstead.
Shirley was preceded in death by her former husband George L. Johnson and her sister Judy Alexander.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 825 Wesley Dr. in Statesville.
Shirley’s family wishes to extend thanks to her caregivers, who provided excellent care, allowing her to spend her final months in the comfort of her home.
