Richard Alexander Hartness, 86, of Statesville, died Sunday February 19, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 13, 1930 in Iredell County to the late Charles and Blanche Alexander Hartness. He was a Graduate of Celeste Henkel High School and served in the United States Air Force from June 1948 – June 1952. He served in the Mighty 8th and went to England twice. He was an airplane mechanic and proud of his service. On October 17, 1952, he married Carole Moose, who survives of Statesville. He was a member of First A.R.P. Church and worked for J.C. Penney Warehouse. Richard was very good at repairing things and spent much time working on cars, mowers, or household appliances. Neighborhood boys came to him for help and to borrow his tools. He was so respected by them he never lost a tool In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, David, Tony and Barry Hartness all of Statesville; grandchildren, Bethany Hartness-Smith (Chris) and Benjamin Hartness, brothers, James Hartness (JoAnn), and Robert Hartness (Barbara), sisters, Charlye Hartness Massey, Linda Hartness Troutman, and Anne Hartness Tolliver (Edwin). He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Hartness. Funeral Service will be held 2:00 Thursday February 23, 2017 at First ARP Church with Rev Phil McCoy officiating. The family will meet with friends from 1 – 2 at the church. Burial will be held at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
