Rex Dean (Sr.) Henderson

Mr. Rex Dean Henderson, Sr., 81, of Statesville, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 20, 2015, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Henderson was born in Iredell County on February 21, 1934, and was the son of the late Clate Henderson and Ellar Shoemaker Henderson.  He was a graduate of Union Grove High School. Mr. Henderson was married to Margaret Lackey Henderson, who preceded him in death in April 2006.  He was a member of Grassy Knob Baptist Church. Mr. Henderson was well known in the Statesville area.  He was the owner\operator of Rex’s Department Store in the early 70’s and the Statesville Newsstand & Grill which was located on Court Street. He also delivered flowers for Four Seasons Florists after his retirement from retail and the restaurant business. Along with his parents and his wife, Margaret, Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his grandson, Adam Frazier, four brothers, Dempsey, Dexter, Troy, and Ralph Henderson along with a daughter-in-law, Debbie W. Henderson. He is survived by two sons, Rex Dean Henderson, Jr. and Byron Keith Henderson (Debbie), both of Statesville and one daughter, Renee H. Bentley (Barry) of Union Grove.  He is also survived by five grandsons, Chad Bentley (Vanessa), Jeremy Bentley (Leslie), Tyler and Garrett Henderson, and Joshua Wiggins (Kristin) along with three granddaughters, Victoria Henderson, Abigail Frazier (Derek), and Kristin Wiggins.  He is further survived by six great-grandchildren, Bryson, Ana, Emma, Maston, Acacia, and Eden.  A host of special friends also survive. Funeral services honoring the life of Rex Henderson will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, April 24, 2015, at Grassy Knob Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Chenevey officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be his grandsons as well as his nephew Jack Dancy.  The family will visit with friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home and other times will be assembled at the home of Dean Henderson, Jr. Memorials may be made to the Grassy Knob Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 333 Grassy Knob Road, Union Grove, NC 28689.
