Regina Crawley

d. April 13, 2014

Mrs. Lela Regina Hoover Fielder Crawley (Aunt Pat) entered her heavenly home on Monday, April 07, 2014 at Caromont Medical Center - Gastonia under the care of Gaston Hospice. She was born in Statesville, NC to the late Dewitt and Annie Hoover on August 12, 1910, making her 103 years old at the time of her death. Up until three weeks prior to her death, she was still very active, attending weekly church services and going out to eat with family members. However, due to a fall after a confrontation with another assisted home resident over her cherished bottle of coffee creamer, she slowly went downhill with a fractured hip and other complications. At least Aunt Pat left us with a little humor in her death. Aunt Pat moved to Washington DC in her late twenties to work for years at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where she supervised the printing of money until the very day President Lyndon Johnson signed an early retirement law and she walked out the door. While in Washington and Maryland she married Harry Fielder, who preceded her in death in 1951. She then married Hugh J. Crawley, Sr., who also preceded her in death in 1977 after moving her to her beloved Saint Petersburg, Florida, where she resided until September of 2008. At that point she moved to a Stanley Total Living Center Independent apartment in Stanley NC to live near her closest family members. She moved to Wexford House Assisted Living in Denver NC in 2011 and then back to Stanley Total Living Center skilled unit after her fall. Mrs. Crawley was a member of Pressley Memorial Church in Statesville and several Presbyterian churches in Washington DC, Maryland and Florida before becoming an associate member of Hill's Chapel United Methodist Church in Stanley, NC. Her desire was to die still being a member of the Presbyterian Church. She had a very strong love for the Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church conference center and campground, Bonclarken, in Flat Rock NC. Aunt Pat is survived by a brother in Law, Neil Moore of Statesville, caretakers niece and nephew-in-law Jane and Frank McAulay of Mount Holly, NC, nephew Jimmy Moore and wife Patti of Charlotte, NC, niece Lisa Moore of Statesville, NC and niece-in-law Kathy McCurdy of Aiken, SC. She also leaves behind 8 great nieces and nephews and 15 great great nieces and nephews. Besides her father and mother and two husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother Neil Hoover and wife Jessie, sister Elmira McCurdy and husband Jim, sister, Nancy Moore, nephews Charles McCurdy, Donnie Moore, and baby boy Moore, and several great great nieces and nephews. She died still searching for an estranged nephew, David Hoover. Graveside funeral service will be conducted 4:00 PM Sunday, April 13, 2014, in Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC with the Reverend Val Rosenquist of Hill's Chapel United Methodist Church officiating. Memorials may be made to Pressley Memorial ARP Church Statesville NC, Bonclarken Conference Center Flat Rock NC or Hill's Chapel United Methodist Church Sanctuary Fund, 988 South Hwy 16, Stanley, NC 28164.
