Pearl Henkel Mundhenke, 90, of Statesville, NC died on Sunday, April 3, 2011 after a brief period of declining health. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Pearl Verna Lee was born December 10, 1920 in Farley, Iowa. She was the only child of the late Alvina Louise "Ollie" and Emil George Henkel. In 1938, Pearl graduated from high school in Hopkinton, Iowa and completed her education at the Bayless Business College in Dubuque, Iowa. On November 11, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa, Pearl married Wilbur LeRoy "Mun" Mundhenke of East Dubuque, Illinois. During their 59 years of marriage while living in Statesville and raising their five daughters, they shared the challenges and successes of a poultry business. � Pearl was a long-time member of the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. She and Mun had also belonged to Pressly Memorial ARP Church. The strength of Pearl's faith along with her compassion for others was shared with both congregations. Her leadership and organizational skills were evident through her mission of service. Pearl was most often found in the church kitchen and was an active member of the Grier Knox Sunday Class, Monday Afternoon Circle, Women of the Church and the church choir. Pearl and Mun lovingly and quietly cared for those in need within their home community and beyond. Pearl especially enjoyed volunteering for the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross and Meals-on-Wheels. Pearl's legacy of devotion and love remains within her five daughters and their families: Jeanne (Tom) Gee of Seward, NE; Carolyn (Chase) Saunders of Charlotte, NC; Patti (Kent) Troxler of Conyers, GA; Pamela (David) Aman and Louanne (Larry) Watts, both of Statesville; 11 grandchildren: Matthew, Alex and Logan Gee; Jason (Caren) Saunders and London (Richard) Saunders Roth; Lauren Troxler; Joshua and Jessica Aman; Sarah, Stephanie and Emory Watts; two great-granddaughters: Hayden and Harper Saunders; 11 nieces and nephews; her cousins; and a host of friends. Visitation will be held at Nicholson Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on April 7 at First ARP Church in Statesville. Reverend Robert E. Sherer and Dr. John F. Kimmons of Jamestown, NC, will officiate. Interment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Pearl's grandsons: Alex, Logan, and Matthew Gee, Jason Saunders, Josh Aman and Emory Watts. The family will be together at the home of David and Pam Aman, 180 Monticello Road, on Thursday afternoon following services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First ARP Church, Pressly Memorial ARP Church, or American Red Cross. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Pearl Mundhenke.
