Nancy Houpe (Beckham) Cook

April 3, 1941 — November 1, 2018

On November 1, 2018 Nancy Cook entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Dementia took some of her abilities and memories, but it never took her joy.  Nancy was born April 3, 1941 in Iredell County to Rev. John Lester and Gladys Combs Beckham, who preceded her in death.  She is survived by her husband, Johnny Cook, and daughters, Dawn Houpe (Oliver Mayfield) of Charleston, SC; Alice Robinson (Bill) of Statesville; and Jennifer Dagenhart.  The grandchildren are Andy Robinson, Casey Ann Robinson, Jacob Dagenhart, Rose Houpe and Lilly Houpe, and one great- grandson, Tyler Robinson.  Nancy’s siblings are Leon Beckham (Patti) of Dayton, OH; Katie Giblin (Patrick) of Naples, FL; Phyllis Cagle (Jim) of Tampa, FL; and Lisa Schumacher (Jim) of Weddington, NC.  Nancy graduated from Central High School; Lenoir Rhyne College, and obtained her master’s degree from Appalachian State University.  She retired from the Iredell-Statesville School system after teaching English and reading for more than 30 years.  Nancy cared deeply for her students.  Beyond their academic progress, she cared about her students having clothing and food, which she provided many times.

In retirement, Nancy ran “Meme’s Summer Camp” for her grandchildren, where they read many books, attended Vacation Bible School and had numerous field trips.  She was also a care giver for her parents.  Nancy cherished her family and devoted herself to them.  Special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Elder Center and Gordon Hospice House for their kindness.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 3 in Oakwood Cemetery with her long-time neighbor, Rev. Carl Williams officiating.  Following the graveside service, the family will adjourn to Nancy’s residence to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elder Center, 502 Brevard Street, P. O. Box 1162, Statesville, NC  28687.
