Nan Norris Douglas went to be with her Lord Tuesday, November 19, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late William Baines Norris and Ada Velie Sloop Norris. Nan was born on December 18, 1917 in Iredell County. She was a graduate of Harmony School. She lived and worked in Washington D.C. for seven years before returning to Iredell County. She married John William Douglas on May 3, 1941. She and her husband were instrumental in the operation of Douglas & Bess Custom Farming. They founded Douglas & Sons Trucking Company in 1982 and remained active in the company many years after retirement. Nan was very active in Friendship United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She especially valued the friendship and love of the United Methodist Women. She was a strong supporter and active in fundraisers for the building of the new church sanctuary. She was a church historian for many years. She was a devoted mother and wife, working tirelessly to raise her boys while her husband drove a truck in the early years of the trucking company. She loved to travel and visited much of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She is survived by four sons, John W. "Skip" Douglas, Jr. and fianc� Robin Eckard, Robert Steven "Butch" Douglas (Terri), Michael Kevin "Mouse" Douglas (Nancy), and James Dean "Peanut" Douglas (Sue), all of Statesville. She is also survived by two sisters, Alma and Kathleen, and one brother, Dick. She is further survived by her grandchildren, John Keiler Douglas (LeAnn), of Statesville, Nora Katherine "Katie" Douglas and fianc� Jeremy Walch of St. Petersburg, Florida, Jill Leanne Douglas Warren (Mark), of Statesville, and Terry Carmony and fianc� Tracy Combs, of Charlotte, as well as two great granddaughters, Adalee Aislinn Douglas and Evelinn Grace Douglas, along with a number of nieces and nephews. She was a wonderful grandmother, giving time, hugs, and love to her four grandchildren. Nan was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, J.W. Douglas and by five sisters, Blanche, Pearle, Mabel, Mary, Nell, and one brother, Glenn. A service celebrating Nan's life will be conducted at Friendship United Methodist Church on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The service will be conducted by Reverend Holly Cobb Adams and Reverend Dr. Don Haynes. The burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends and loved ones in the church fellowship hall following the service. Serving as active pallbearers will be her sons, Skip, Larry, Butch, Mike, Jim, and grandson-in-law, Mark Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be: John Lundy, Bruce Lundy, Bill Martin, John Martin, Joe Johnson, and Randy Mattocks.
