Mary Catherine Winebarger Hogan of Statesville, NC passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2019 following a brief, critical illness.
Mary was born in Wilkes County in September 1946, the daughter of Clifford and Naomi Koch Winebarger and the third of five children. She was a graduate of Union Grove High School.
As a young mother, she worked in the hospitality and manufacturing industries. She retired as a homemaker and devoted her years to her family, calling them on the phone, inviting them to the house for a hug, or sending a care package in the mail.
She fed everyone in her house indiscriminately. Mary was perhaps most at home in her kitchen. Sunday suppers were the centerpiece of her passion, a place for family to laugh, visit, and enjoy each other over tables full of her signature southern cooking.
Mary was a devout Christian and enjoyed singing in her church choir, teaching Sunday school, and coordinating Vacation Bible School programs for hundreds of children. Though her family misses her dearly, we know she rests now in close communion with our Lord Jesus Christ and can join choirs of angels singing thanks and praise.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Winebarger. She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Keith Hogan, her daughters Andrea Royall and Alicia Hopkins, step-sons James Hogan (Kelly) and Brian Hogan (Heather), and brothers Clifford Winebarger, Gene Winebarger (Caroldine), and David Winebarger (Judy).
The beloved center of a family that now spans four generations, she was the cherished “Granny” to her grandchildren, Angelica, Connor, Leah, Julia, Thomas, Phoenix, and Annie, and she was the treasured great-grandmother to Liam and Julian.
Services will be on Saturday, March 23. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral Home in Statesville. The Rev. Carl Williams will preside. Burial will follow at Rock Spring Baptist Church. Mary was a longtime supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and her family would be honored by any memorials contributed in support of their mission.
