Marie Adeline White Shumaker was born June 29, 1920. She peacefully went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. She leaves her four daughters and their families to cherish her memory, Rebecca Beaver (Butch) of Statesville, Reba Walden (Warren) of Granite Falls, Rena Provo of Charleston, SC, and Regina Welsted of Statesville. Four grandchildren, Kristi Blackburn (Mike) of Waynesville, Jonathan Provo of Boston, Mass., Travis Watt of Seattle, WA., and Maddie Provo of New York, NY. Three great-grandchildren, Hudson, Henry, and Hardy Blackburn of Waynesville, NC. Also surviving is one sister, Irene White Ijames of Morganton and three sister-in-laws, Mrs. Margaret White, Mrs. Helen White, and Mrs. Jan White, and eleven nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Lee Shumaker, four brothers, Hugh, James, William, and S.B. White, and two sisters, Lois White Ferguson and Sadie White Gabriel. Marie graduated from Union Grove High School in 1938 and Appalachian State Teachers College (ASU) in 1942. She was an educator in the Iredell Schools teaching second, third, and fourth grades for a total of 36 years, Celeste Henkel (2 years), Union Grove (2 years), and 32 years at Central. She loved children and they loved her. She wanted to make a difference with her life. She felt she could best do this by being a good teacher and a good mother. Marie always worked hard and loved being outside. She helped her husband, Lee, on the farm. She would help plant the garden and hitch up the tractor and fix fences, and help raise the baby calves on the dairy farm. She would get up early to feed the calves before getting ready to go teach school and then help with the milking in the evening. Her life was busy as a farmer’s wife. Our family would like to thank Marie’s doctors over the years. A very special than you to Dr. Carla Pence and Dr. Pam Scholar and her staff, who worked diligently to provide excellent medical care and expertise for Marie’s many and varied medical issues especially in the last years. Our family would also like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to Marie’s caregivers who helped so much in the care of our mother. Thank you to Gloria Benfield Wilhelm, who was a former student of Marie’s, Kelly Feimster, Wini Feimster, Nancy Beckham, Yvonne Robinson, and Sue Cook. They enriched Mom’s life and gave her a better quality of life. Thank you for the care given by Gordon’s Hospice nurses and CNA’s. Instead of flowers, the family would ask that memorials be given to the music fund of Trinity United Methodist Church, 106 Trinity Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or to the Gordon Hospice House of Iredell County, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625. Marie was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1956 and always loved and supported her church and loved being there. This is where services will be held for Marie. Visitation will be Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM and the Funeral will be held on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 2:00 PM where the body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
