Marianna Johnson Speaks, 92, of Statesville, passed away Monday morning, December 10, 2018 at her home. Heaven has gained a new Saint. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother and devoted her life to caring for others.
Mrs. Speaks was born October 3, 1926 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Henry Pinkney Johnson and Beulah Carter Johnson. She attended Cool Spring School and on February 1, 1953 was married to Grady Wayne Speaks who survives. They shared 65 years of marriage together. She was a long-time member of Abilene Church of Christ.
Mrs. Speaks was the last member of her family and was preceded in death by five sisters, Rebecca J. Hedrick, Deliah J. Smith, Christine J. Parks, Sybil J. Flannery, Patsy J. Gantt, and three brothers, Wesley Johnson, Walter Johnson, and H.P. “June” Johnson. She was also preceded in death by one son, Philip Speaks.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Wayne Speaks and wife Amy, Jeff Speaks, one daughter, Patty Summers and husband Mickey, all of Statesville. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Rob Summers (Stephanie), Roxie Barnes, Cynthia S. Moore (Dwayne), Stephanie S. Brooks (Clay), Daniel Brown, along with great-grandchildren, Michael and Kathyrn Summers, Austin and Charlotte Moore, Ryan and Liam Brooks, Madelyn and Gabrielle Barnes. A number of nieces and nephews also survive Mrs. Speaks.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Speaks will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Abilene Church of Christ with Minister Dave Olson officiating. Burial will follow in the Abilene Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home.
