Margaret Munro Gilbert Odell passed peacefully into eternal life on February 24, 2012 at The Pines at Davidson where she was a resident in Schramm Health Center. Born June 6, 1923 in New York, Margaret was the daughter of the late Walter J & Esther Munro. She grew up in Scarsdale, New York. After graduating from Scarsdale High School, she attended Wheaton College, Mount Holyoke College & graduated from the University of Maryland. Margaret married James (Jim) Gawley Gilbert in 1947 In Scarsdale, NY where they began their family before moving to Statesville, NC in 1953. She & Jim were married for 34 years until his death in 1981. "Muffie", as she was affectionately known by her family, was a devoted wife, a loving mother & proud grandmother. She cherished her times with her children and grandchildren and was always there with them for the special events in their lives. Margaret was a member of Statesville Country Club. She valued her friendships & time spent with friends in garden club, book club and especially loved playing bridge. In 1992 she married a long time friend, William Floyd Odell, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He became an integral part of the family, embracing her children & grandchildren. Margaret & Floyd resided in Honolulu & Moline, Illinois They loved their time travelling together to many countries from Europe to China until his death in 1999. Margaret then moved back to Statesville prior to moving to The Pines at Davidson. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Gilbert Maxfield & her husband, John of Raleigh, NC and her son, James Munro Gilbert & his wife, Marcia of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are her grandchildren Ian Maxfield of Raleigh, NC, Grant Gilbert of New York City, NY and Neely Gilbert of Charleston, SC as well as her sister-in-law Jeane Munro of Asheville, NC and nieces, Lauren (Dick) Ives, Lee (Alan) Mojonnier and nephew Jay (Julie) Munro. In addition to her parents and husbands, Margaret was preceded in death by her brother Walter J Munro, Jr. Her family would like to express sincere gratitude for the loving care of the staff at Schramm Health Center at The Pines at Davidson, NC. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 26 at 2:00pm at Nicholson Funeral Home 135 East Front St. Statesville, NC 28677 with visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be made to The Oscar C Rixson Foundation, PO Box 19255, Asheville, NC 28815 for the support of Christian Missionaries.
