Lloyd R. Shaw of Statesville died February 2, 2011 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shaw was born in Statesville on September 10, 1936, to the late Dr. Lloyd R. Shaw, Sr. and Gertrude Watts Shaw. He attended First Presbyterian Church and schools in Statesville, graduating from Statesville High School in 1954. He would go on to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1958, majoring in English. He received his Master's Degree in English from Vanderbilt University in 1960. He retired in 2005 after more than three decades as a professor of English at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland. For the past 15 years, he had reviewed poetry and mysteries for In his younger days, many of his poems and short stories were published. He received numerous awards and grants, including one from the Ford Foundation. He began bird-watching and stamp collecting in his teen years and continued bird-watching on up to his retirement. In 2005, he moved to Statesville from his home in Alexandria, Virginia. After retirement he took up his stamp collecting again which continued on up to his last days. Since returning to Statesville, he had also enjoyed reading, flower gardening, and the friendship of his Statesville High School classmates of 1954 which meets on a regular basis. He was also a "friend of Bill." Survivors include sisters Elizabeth Shaw Kennedy of Statesville and Carolyn Shaw Gooden of Mooresville; a brother-in-law, William R. Gooden of Mooresville; nephews, Paul J. Kennedy (Shelly) of Winston-Salem, Michael S. Kennedy (Cindy) of Clemmons, Robert L. Gooden of Mooresville, Thomas W. Gooden of Davidson, and, and one niece, Julia Kennedy White (Robbie) of Huntersville. He is also survived by great-nephews Andrew Kennedy, Brooks Kennedy, and Mitchell Kennedy, and one great-niece Sophia White. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, February 5 from 1-2 at First Presbyterian Church fellowship room in Statesville. Gravesite services will follow at 2:30 in Oakwood Cemetery.
