Omer Fields McCoy, Jr, 79, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC. Jim was born October 26, 1933, in Rowan County, NC and was the son of the late Omer Fields McCoy, Sr., and Mary Smith McCoy. He attended Iredell County Schools and served in the U.S. Army. On December 5, 1953 he was married to Dorothy Overcash McCoy, who survives. He worked for the J.C. Penney Distribution Center for 37 � years before retiring and then for seven years at the Statesville Auto Auction. He was a talented carpenter and builder in his earlier years, doing renovations and small repair jobs on the side. Jim was a former member of the Cool Springs Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member of the Wayside Volunteer Fire Department where he served as an assistant fire chief for 10 years. He was an active and former member of the Bethesda and Elmwood Presbyterian Churches where he served as a deacon, elder, on the Board of Christian Education and church treasurer along with many other areas of Christian outreach. He later joined the First ARP Church in Statesville and was currently a member of the Covenant ARP Church in Statesville. He was a past member of the Evening Exchange Club, working tirelessly for SCAN, Stop Child Abuse Now. His life was service to God, family and community, always with a heart of helping others, especially the young children and older adults and anyone in need. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Jim is survived by one son, Omer Fields "Jim" McCoy, III and his wife Elizabeth. Four grandchildren, Josiah Fields McCoy who is a Junior at UNC Chapel Hill, Hannah Kathryn McCoy who is in her first year of Covenant College in Chattanooga, TN, Micah Adam McCoy and Deborah Grace McCoy, all of Statesville. He is further survived by a sister, Mary Carolyn McCoy (Phillip); three brothers, Billy Smith McCoy (Wanda), John William McCoy (Nettie), and Edward Joseph McCoy (Connie), all of Statesville. His blessings were his family, his wife of 59 years, his son, daughter-in-law, and his grandchildren. His joy was complete in their achievements and their lives which are dedicated to the Lord he served and which spoke his beliefs. A service to celebrate Jim's life will be conducted 3:00 PM Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Covenant ARP Church with Rev. Jeffrey E. Jacobs officiating and burial with full military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at the church on Saturday from 1:30 until 3:00 pm. Memorial may be made to Covenant ARP Church, 120 N.
