Dewey Frederick Dowell, Jr., 82, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Maple Leaf Health Care Center in Statesville, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 1, 1932, in Statesville, to the late Dewey F. Dowell, Sr. and Velta Redmond Dowell. Fred was a retired textile executive from the United Merchants Mfg., where he was employed for 43 years. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees, taught Sunday school and was the auctioneer for the annual Thanksgiving celebration. He was a founding member of the Trinity Volunteer Fire Dept. and he was also a former member of the Monticello Lions Club. Fred was an avid lover of Bluegrass music and served as a judge of musical competitions for over 30 years. He enjoyed trips to the mountains, good food, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joshua Dowell and William Dowell (Glenda). He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 62 years, Mary Josephine Jolly Dowell. In addition, he is survived by his children, Frederick Michael Dowell and wife, Gail; Rodney Kent Dowell and wife, Lauri; Angela Quinn Dowell Winebarger and husband Scott. He is also survived by his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Clint, Hannah, Samuel (Cristina), and Matthew Dowell; Peyton, Chloe, and Blake Winebarger; and step-grandchildren, Jaime Powell; Ali, Brett, and Sean Bowen; and Cameron King. Fred is also survived by his brothers, Landon (Loretta); Lyman (Louise); and Tommy (Linda) and sisters, Lynn D. Jolly (Joe Jr); Ila D. Simpson (Homer); Kay D. Brown (William, deceased); and Faye D. Ellis (Frank), and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, January 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Statesville, with Rev. Mike Duncan, Rev. R.C. Redmond, Rev. Dwight Dowell, and Rev. Ervel Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, January 15, from 6 to 8pm, at Nicholson Funeral Home in Statesville. Active pallbearers will be Terry Jolly, Brandon Jolly, Casey Jolly, Dr. Tom Jolly, Rhyne Dowell, Mark Dowell, Tim Hayes and Scott Wilson.
