John Preston Summers, 101, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at The Gardens, where he had resided the past 4 � years. Mr. Summers was born July 10, 1910 in Iredell County and was the son of the late William Thomas Summers and Nora Bertha Abernathy Summers. He attended Cool Springs High School and during WWII, he helped build military airplanes with the Glenn L. Martin Corp. in Baltimore, MD. For 27 years he worked for Stimpson Hoisery Mill and later worked for Sears for 15 years, retiring in 1975. He lived in Charlotte from 1972-2005 and married the late Mary Cathy Summers. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy Dale Summers, who died in May 14, 1969. He was a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. Mr. Summers is survived by one son, John Preston Summers, Jr. (Genny) of Alpharetta, GA, one daughter, Nancy Dale Summers Cook of Statesville, four grandchildren, Sydney Summers, Rachel Summers, Jennifer Cook Ostwalt, Grayson Cook, two great grandchildren, Ella Ostwalt and Clayton Lyons and two sisters, Catherine Tomlin and Betty Brendle, both of Statesville. In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Current, Mary Deal Summers and one brother, William Charles Summers. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte with burial to follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Sunday evening 6:00-8:00 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home and also following the funeral service in Charlotte. Active pallbearers will be Grayson Cook, Clayton Lyons, Lewis Ostwalt, Bill Brendle, John Carpenter and Charlie Cathy.
