John A. Holmes was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 11, 1941. He moved to North Carolina in 1959 to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the university in 1963 with a B.A. in American History. John was drafted into the Army in 1966 and served honorably until discharged in 1968.
John is survived by his former wife Nancy, living in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina. He is also survived by his two children, a son Jay (Cristy) living in Durham, North Carolina and a daughter Heather Martin (Hunter) living in Fort Myers, Florida. John is also survived by his sister Lila Richards living in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.
After Graduating from UNC, John worked for the State of North Carolina. Upon being discharged from the Army, John went to work in the cut and sew textile industry in management. After retirement, he worked at Bi-Lo for several years in the Produce Department.
He has lived many years in Statesville, North Carolina with his companion and caregiver, Glenda Smith. In retirement, he loved working in the yard, being a good neighbor, and watching the Tarheels beat Duke in Basketball and Football.
Services celebrating Mr. Holmes’ life will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday evening at Nicholson Funeral Home with Rev. James Lewis officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. He will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.
