Joe Rayle Stevenson

January 17, 1932 — February 22, 2019

Joe Rayle Stevenson, 87, of Statesville, went Home to be with his heavenly Father Friday, February 22, 2019 at his residence.  He was born in Iredell County to the late John Harvey and Salle Martin Stevenson.

Joe was a graduate of Scotts High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division.  On May 16, 1953, he married Carolyn Deal, who survives.  They shared over 65 years of marriage before his passing.  He retired from Kewaunee Scientific Furniture after 38 years of service in the engineering department.  Joe was a member of American Legion Post 65 and a charter member of the Duck Creek Gun Club.  He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church.

Thanks to an organ donor (twice) and the “gift of life”, Joe had over 20 years in which to see his sons and grandchildren grow up.  We will be forever grateful for this gift and to know how important organ donations can be.  Joe was also thankful and proud that he drove for over 70 years without a ticket.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Harvey Stevenson, Jr. and Junius Thomas Stevenson; one sister, Marge Addington; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Stevenson; and a brother-in-law, Bob Addington.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Joseph Brent Stevenson (Kay) of Mocksville and William Eric Stevenson (Penny) of Denver; two grandchildren, Ayla Brie Stevenson and Grant William Stevenson (Alyssa); three step-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Stevenson (Charles) and Bonnie (Bill); and one sister-in-law, Sue C. Stevenson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Stevenson officiating.  Burial with military rites provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.  The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 1:45 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.  Online condolences may be made to the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com and Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family.
