Janice Marie Shoemaker Gryder, 66, of Statesville, passed away at her home unexpectedly on Thursday, October 9, 2014. She was born in Iredell County on April 8, 1948 to the late Latham Ray Shoemaker and Lillie Austin Shoemaker, who survives. Janice was a graduate of Cool Springs High School and received her teaching degree from Appalachian State University. She later received her Masters Degree in Administration from Lenoir Rhyne College. On August 7, 1970, she married Larry Graham Gryder, who survives. She was a school teacher at East Elementary and served as Assistant Principal at Mt. Mourne and Lake Norman Elementary. She retired as Principal of Monticello Elementary in 2003. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer and was a Sunday school teacher. Janice enjoyed bowling, working crossword puzzles, working with her flowers, traveling and loved her two granddaughters. Mrs. Gryder is survived by her husband, Larry G. Gryder of the home; a daughter, Andrea G. Ballard (David); a son, Ty Gryder (Kellie); two granddaughters, Hallie and Jenna Ballard; her mother, Lillie Austin Shoemaker; a sister, Linda Parker (Jim); and two brothers, Gene Fred Shoemaker and Tim Shoemaker (Barbara), all of Statesville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Gryder will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Providence United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Schnitzlein officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends following the services at the church. Active pallbearers will be Vic Ellis, Corey Parker, Kris Shoemaker, Matt Morrison, Toby Galliher, Steve Gatton, and Robbie Overcash. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Providence UMC, 1273 Old Mocksville Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
