Janet Pate Spell, 64, of Statesville, NC passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast, Concord, NC. Born May 31, 1948 in Clinton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Richard Norwood "Pinky" Pate, Sr. and Marie Sessoms Pate. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and the Moses Cone Hospital X-Ray program in Greensboro, NC. On February 9, 1969 she was married to Harry Clifton Spell who survives. She worked at Moses Cone Hospital as an X-Ray Technician, also at Baptist Hospital, Birmingham, Ala., and Fulton County Hospital, Atlanta, GA. Her long lasting career has been that of homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. Jan grew up Presbyterian by faith but had attended First Baptist Church in Statesville. She enjoyed playing Canasta, spending time with her family and grandchildren and helping people through the Iredell Cancer Fund of which she was a founding member. In addition to her husband of 44 years, Jan is survived by two daughters, Anna Marie Spell Blount (Christopher) of Statesville, Mary Susan Spell Ricks (Geoffrey) of Davidson, NC, a son, Peter (Pete) Clifton Spell and fianc� Christen Croucher of Davidson, NC. Four grandchildren, Caroline Cameron Blount, Catherine "Cate" Pierce Blount, Cooper Little Ricks and Marshall Clifton Ricks along with a brother, Richard Norwood Pate, Jr. (Maxine) of Pinellas Park, Fla., two sisters, Nancy P. Rollins (Bruce) of Raleigh, NC and Laure P. Norris (Bobby) of Elizabethtown, NC. An uncle, Hubbard Pate (Annie) of Roseboro, NC and two aunts, Kay Stephens (Robert) of Courtland, NY and Georgeanna Pierce (Robert) of Charlestown, WV also survive. A memorial service to celebrate the life and birthday of Jan will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, May 31, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Statesville with Rev. Dr. Jeff Porter and Dr. Jack Causey officiating. The family will visit with friends at the church following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Iredell Cancer Fund, c/o Kelly Johnson, 566 Old Mountain Road, Statesville, NC 28677. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Pam Sholar, for her care and support during the past 25 years, the ICU at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Lisa Fraser and Pamela Brewer, the 4 floor nurses, Shawna, Lisa, Tammy, Tita and CNA Teresa, and at CMC Northeast, ICU nurses Mary, Shelia, Van, Todd, Susan and Michael along with Dr. Patrick Chiu, Dr. Garry Schwartz, Dr. Greg Pape and Dr. Francois Picot.
