James Quince Martin

Mr. James (Jim) Quince Martin, 73, of Statesville, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Gordon Hospice House. He had been in declining health for several years. Jim was born Wednesday, May 13, 1942 in Iredell County to the late Odell and Dorothy Church Martin. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1960. He furthered his education by attending courses and seminars on concrete technology, technical service and sales. He was very skilled in solving problems in the ready-mix concrete industry. Jim was well known and respected throughout North and South Carolina for his knowledge and skill in the ready-mix concrete industry. Jim was employed by Gilbert Ready Mix in Statesville for several years. Later he worked for Hoots Concrete in Winston-Salem for about 18 months. He returned to work in Statesville and worked for Statesville Concrete Products until failing health required him to become disability retired in 1980. He helped organize the Statesville-Mooresville Homebuilders Association. He was a charter member and served as secretary of the Homebuilders Association for several years. He was an active member and held several offices in the Monticello Ruritan Club. Jim played football in high school and he enjoyed helping coach youth football teams. He was President of the North Piedmont Babe Ruth Baseball League for several years. On September 27, 1990 the Sertoma Club presented him with the Service To Mankind Award for “Significant And Meritorious Service To Mankind” in recognition for his work and loyal service to the North Piedmont Baseball League and management of the baseball park. Jim was a charter member of the Mt.Sinai Evangelical Methodist Church where he held several offices and was a Sunday School teacher. On Easter Sunday, 1980, he joined Beulah Baptist Church. He married Brenda Renegar Martin on September 16, 1967 and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Brent James Martin and his fiancée, Stacy, of Rock Hill, S.C. and Kevin Ryan Martin and his wife, Samantha, of Raleigh. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth Martin and Kelli Marie Martin both of Rock Hill, S.C. and Jackson Ryan Martin of Raleigh. Further survivors include two brothers, Johnny Martin (Gloria) and David Martin (Joy) all of Statesville. Services celebrating Jim’s life will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Roberts officiating. He will lie in state at the church for thirty minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today (Sunday) from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Nicholson Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be: Steve Brown, Larry Stone, Buck Gatton, Jim Caskaddon, Ronald Clodfelter, Daryl, Howard and Michael Martin.
