James Nelson (Jim) Sloan

November 8, 1939 — November 25, 2018

James Nelson “Jim” Sloan, 79, of Statesville, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Sloan was born in Iredell County on November 8, 1939 and was the son of the late Ernest Neal Sloan, Sr and Ena Pearl Goodin Sloan.  He was a graduate of Central School.

Mr. Sloan served his country proudly in the U.S. Army in Germany as a military police officer.

On January 8, 1966 he married Karen Stobert Sloan and together they shared 52 years of marriage before his passing.

Mr. Sloan was a life-long member of Mountain View United Methodist Church.  He loved his church and his church family.  He served on the board of trustees and never shied away from serving on other committees where he was needed.  He was employed with Kewaunee Scientific where he worked as the cabinet room supervisor and retired following 23 years of service.

He had a love for woodworking and he was a master wood craftsman.  He was an avid golfer and following his retirement, he took up fishing, which he only did if he couldn’t play golf.  All these activities and hobbies paled in comparison to the love and passion he had for his family.  The joy he found being with his children and grandchildren could only be matched by the time he spent with his loving wife Karen.  He will be so deeply missed by his loving family along with his dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Maynard and Gilbert Sloan along with two sisters, Wadie Stewart and Joan Sharpe and his mother-in-law Jane V. Stobert.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Karen Sloan of the home, three daughters, Kimberly Smith (Randy), Beth Sloan, and Missy Lingle (Lance) along with two sons, Jamie Sloan (Amy) and Jon Sloan.  He is also survived by six grandchildren, BreAnna and Alexis Smith, Torrin, Tenley, Raylin and Reid Sloan along with two sisters, Betty S. Sloan and Nancy Levan Little (Les) and one brother, E.N. Sloan, Jr.  He is further survived by his in-laws, Jane Williams (Donald), Gale Hazlett, Christine Lassinger (Jim), Janice Larko (Greg), Becky Ringler, Tom Stobert (Sue), Kim Stobert (Darlene), Jeff Stobert (Casey), Jack Stobert (Charlene) and Ken Acre.  A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services honoring the life of Mr. Sloan will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday, November 29 at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Pastor Sarah Fisher officiating.   Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will visit with friends on Wednesday evening, November 28 from 6 PM until 8 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home.
