John Manson "Jack" Sherrill, 65, passed away at The Pines at Davidson on July 12, 2011. He was born August 6, 1945 to the late Margaret Armstrong Sherrill and Flake Anderson Sherrill. Jack graduated from Statesville High School in 1963 and received his BA in History from Davidson College in 1967. In 1967 he was commissioned 2nf Lt. in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Branch, serving his country in the Vietnam Conflict from 1969 to 1970. He left the service at the end of his career as 1 Lt. During the conflict he was awarded a Bronze Star. He returned to school in 1970 earning a BS in Forestry Management from NC State University in 1972. Jack started his professional career in 1972 working for Daniel H. Gelbert and Associates, leaving as a Vice President in 1977. He returned to Statesville in 1978 opening his own consulting forestry practice, Jack Sherrill and Associates, licensed to practice in NC and SC. Jack was elected President of the NC Society of Consulting Foresters in 1988 serving in that capacity for two years. He had previously served in other capacities and as a board member. He was a member of the NC Forestry Association and American Forestry Association. In 2007, Jack was recognized by the NC Forestry Association as Forester of the Year. Jack has been a member of Statesville's Arts and Science Museum serving as a Board member and Board Chairperson. He served on the Board of Directors of Camp Tekoa, United Methodist Church. He was a life time member of Trout Unlimited and served its local affiliate in a number of capacities. Jack was a lifelong member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. He served as President of the Men's Bible Class, Chairperson of the Evangelism Committee, Adult Council Coordinator, Council on Ministries, the Administrative Board, and as Church Lay Leader. He also served his church as scout master of Troop 175, taking particular pride in working with those young people and turning out more than a handful of Eagle Scouts. He leaves behind his brother, F. Anderson Sherrill, Jr. and wife, Cummins, a niece, Elizabeth Sherrill Druga (John) and a nephew, Flake A. Sherrill, III. His family and friends will always miss his kind and gentle spirit. Jack lived a life of "service to others" which demonstrated in the loves of his life--- his church, his profession, his family and his friends. The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff of the Health Care Center of The Pines at Davidson for their kind and loving care over the last several years. Visitation will be at the residence of Anderson Sherrill, 3209 Deauville Place in Statesville on Friday, July 15 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville. Interment will follow the service in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to Endowment for Local Missions at Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O.
