J. D. Brawley, 86, of Statesville, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Iredell County on June 19, 1928 to the late George Espy Brawley and Alice Benfield Brawley. Mr. Brawley was educated in the Iredell County Schools and on July 2, 1949 married Colleen Bennett Brawley, who survives. They had over 65 years of marriage before his passing. He was retired from Bernhardt Furniture after many years of service. He was a member of Landmark Church of God. He was a self-made man who could fix about anything. He loved his church, helping others, and being the church handyman. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Byron Mason; six sisters, Laura Hutto, Lucille Barnes, Maude Holland, Mary Lee, Margaret Johnson, and Jettie Hutto; and two brothers, Robert and Ray Brawley. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Colleen; two daughters, Sandra Mason (Randy) and Jaye Bennett (Brian), both of Statesville; one grandson, Justin Bennett; a granddaughter, Maranda Bennett; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Landmark Church of God with Pastor Ken Hudson and Pastor Ben Black officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00PM prior to the service.
