Mrs. Mary Idelle McLemore Davis, 100, of Statesville, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Clare Bridge of Statesville. Mrs. Davis was born September 1, 1913, in Cabarrus County and was the daughter of the late Daniel Walter and Mattie Gay McLemore. She was a graduate of Davidson High School and she attended Davidson College, Winthrop College and Coker College. Mrs. Davis was the pianist for First Baptist Church in Dillon, SC, and a bookkeeper for Belk Stores in Dillon, where she met her husband, William Young Davis, who she married on August 3, 1941. She was a homemaker and devoted mother, to four children, who survive. Mrs. Davis and her husband were longtime members of First Baptist Church in Statesville. Mr. Davis was on the building committee for the new church in the 1950's, which is now located on Davie Avenue. Mr. Davis died in 1991. Mrs. Davis was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Statesville Woman's Club. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by four children, William Young Davis, Jr. of Kings Mt., Gay Davis Connolly Suther of Statesville, Harry McLemore Davis (Lisa) of Boone, and Clell Thomas Davis of Lenior. She is also survived by five grandchildren, James Thomas Connolly, Jr., (Tammy) of Winston-Salem, Neal P. Connolly (Elisa) of Statesville, Carrington Brown (Jason) of Boone, Alison Beal (Andrew) of Wake Forest, and Samantha LeGrand (Cameron) of Concord, along with 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Davis will be conducted 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kyle Goodman officiating. The family will visit with friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
