Hubert Wesley Brown, 100, began a new journey on January 19, 2016. He was born in Troutman on October 16, 1915 to the late Percy Leroy Brown and Stella Oswalt Brown and graduated from Troutman High School in 1935. On October 16, 1937, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Davidson, whom he lost March 31, 2007. Hubert served his country during the Second World War, graduating from U.S. Maritime Service Training in Sheephead Bay, N.Y., and was commissioned with the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked many years at Troutman Grocery, then with Gilbert Engineering and retired in 1980 from Miller Machinery Company. After retiring, he loved his gardening, constructing wood stoves, and welding. Hubert is survived by a daughter, Cynthia B. Lackey; three grandchildren, Lori A. Buckley (John), W. Todd Anderson (Julie), and Robert W. Anderson; five great grandchildren, Taylor and Jack Buckley, Brittany and Heather Anderson, and Parker Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Johnny, Wilbur, Dalmas, Boyd, A.C., and Fred; two sisters, Helen Putnam and Dorothy Tevepaugh; and a grandson, Walton Scott Anderson. Hubert will especially be remembered for his loving, faithful care he gave his wife of 70 years during her long battle with Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Welcome Baptist Church, 2068 Shelton Ave., Statesville, NC 28677 or to the Donor’s choice. A celebration of life service will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 21, 2016 in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Eanes and Rev. Tom Sherrod officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the funeral home. There will be a family burial held in Oakwood Cemetery prior to the visitation.
