Mr. Homer Arthur Estes, 86, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Gordon Hospice House. He was born in Iredell County on May 9, 1928 to the late Ernest L. and Lottie Messick Estes. He married Hazel Lee Lackey Estes on September 28, 1946 and they shared 68 loving years together. Homer was an active member of Front Street Baptist Church since moving to Statesville in 1955 where he served as a Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher and served on the Nominating Committee, Church Building Committee, Pastor Search Committee and was also very active in the Baptist Men's Organization. He was also a member of the Baptist Men's Choir and the Sanctuary Choir until his and his wife's health began to fail. He retired from Rental Uniform Service after 30 years as a route salesman, plant manager and route supervisor. He attended Stony Point School. Homer loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was adored by all as their "Paw" and enjoyed serving, working and activities with his family at church. He also enjoyed working with his friends and customers on the job, gardening, trips to the beach and playing golf with family and friends along with taking his grandchildren to play putt putt and on trips to Florida, Walt Disney World and their exciting trip to the Bahamas and Grand Canyon with Tim's family. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Tony Arthur Estes in 1951, his youngest brother, Dwight Estes and brothers, Dewey and Elmer Estes and a sister Hazel Estes Moose. Survivors include his loving wife, Hazel, a daughter, Peggy Estes Sharpe and her husband, Mickey of Statesville, two sons, Tim Estes and his wife, Kathy of Statesville and Jeff Estes and his wife, Robin of Lake Wylie, S.C. along with brothers, Herman Estes of Stony Point and Marvin Estes and his wife, Mary , of Marshall, Arkansas. Also surviving are grandchildren: Brent and Matt Sharpe, Kellie Estes Kerley, Tamara Estes and Bradley and Brandon Estes and great grandchildren: Josh and Austin Sharpe, Ashlyn and Gavin Sharpe and Kendall Kerley. Services celebrating Homer's life will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Front Street Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Stutts and Rev. Marvin Boyer officiating. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary while he lies in state from 12:30 until 2:00 prior to the service. Private burial will follow in the Stony Point Baptist Church Cemetery.
