Mr. Herbert M. Herb Vermilya, II., age 84 of Whitsett, NC died Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Herb was born January 19, 1936 in Winston-Salem, NC to Herbert M. and Dolores Westerbeck Vermilya. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, attended North Carolina State University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico State University. He enjoyed a long career with Bell Labs, Southern Bell, Northwestern Bell, ATT Technologies and retired from Lucent Technologies as an Outside Plant Engineer. He also served as an industry lobbyist in Washington, DC following his retirement. Herb was a U.S. Army veteran, ham radio operator, wood worker, enjoyed shooting sports and was an avid N.C. State Wolfpack fan. He was a first team North Carolina All -State Football selection as an offensive lineman while at R. J. Reynolds. He was recruited by the legendary Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech but thankfully decided to concentrate on academics at N.C. State and remain a Wolfpack fan. He passed on his love of the Wolfpack to his family and followed them throughout his travels during his working career. Herb resided in seven different states but was always a proud North Carolinian. Herb was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents and his wife, Judith Massie Vermilya in 2018. He is survived by his children, Steve (Teri) Vermilya of Kennesaw, GA; Mike (Brenda) Vermilya of Roxboro, NC; Kristi Johnson of Whitsett, NC and Barry (Terra) Johnson of Gibsonville, NC; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Anne) Vermilya of Chapel Hill, NC; sister, Judy Vermilya of Montgomery, AL and a nephew, Tyler Vermilya. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at Hearts of Fire Ministry in Gibsonville, NC with Pastor Jeff Neese officiating and eulogy by Barry Johnson.
