Mrs. Hazel Martin Cook, 91, of Hiddenite, NC, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Cook was born March 28, 1921 in Alexander County and was the daughter of the late William Clarence and Mary Alice Ford Martin. She grew up on a small dairy and tobacco farm during the Great Depression years, helping with farm work and caring for older family members. She was a graduate of Stony Point High School class of 1938 and on February 22, 1947 she married Charles Howard Cook. She was a lifelong farm wife and homemaker. Although Howard worked off the farm in later years, they were a very successful small farm family. Howard preceded Hazel in death on October 13, 1990. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Cook was also preceded in death by an infant sister, one brother, Fred Martin and a foster brother, Lawrence Pearson. Mrs. Cook is survived by two sons, Ronald Lee Cook (Glenda) and Atwell Craig Cook (Kim). Also, four grandchildren that brought her much joy in her later years, Matthew, Joe, Alice and Timothy. She is further survived by three nieces, Martha Childs, Patricia Lloyd and Teresa McLain and three nephews, David Martin, Larry Martin and Kenny Pearson. Funeral services for Mrs. Cook will be conducted 3:00 pm Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Berea Baptist Church in Alexander County with Rev. Charles Cook and Rev. Tony Bunton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Clanton, David Ford, Tim Houser, Robert McLain, Newell Johnson and Gary Bradford. The family will visit with friends Monday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 pm at Berea Baptist Church.
