Mr. Gurney Lee Ball, 79, of Statesville, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Iredell County on March 7, 1935, he was a son of the late Hugh Gurney Ball, Sr. and Levia Jordan Ball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lucy Nielson Ball, a daughter, Amy B. Scarboro, a brother, Hugh Gurney Ball, Jr. and a sister, Evelyn Ball Jones. Mr. Ball was a veteran of the U. S. Army and belonged to the Moose Lodge of Mooresville. He attended Troutman High School. He was self employed prior to retirement. Survivors include a son, Jed Lee Ball of Troutman, a daughter, Mendee Williams of Woodleaf, grandchildren: Brandon Terry, Chasitie Terry, Jordyn Williams, Laura Atkinson, Melissa Sorrells and Matthew Scarboro along with great grandchildren: Drake Sorrells, Kaitlyn Sorrells, Kiera Sorrells and Camron Terry. Also surviving are a brother, Jerry Ball of Troutman and sisters, Mary Ellen Puckett of Mt. Ulla and Ava Ball Moody of Concord along with several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at Iredell Memorial Gardens with Rev. Robert Suttles officiating. Full Military Rites will be presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 Wednesday at Nicholson Funeral Home and he will lie in state in an open casket at the cemetery from 2:30 until 3:00 prior to the service.
