Glady Claxton Elliott, 87, of Statesville, NC passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Annabelle Lundy Elliott, who resides in Statesville. He is the son of Emma Godfrey Elliott and Glady Claxton Elliott, Sr. of Stony Point, NC, both deceased. Three daughters also survive Mr. Elliott: Dorinda Elliott Freeman (Mrs. William Morris Freeman, Jr.) of Southampton, NY; Laura Elliott Crockett (Mrs. Robert Kemp Crockett) of Coral Gables, FL; and Jennifer Anne Elliott of Huntersville, NC. He is also survived by one grandson, Thomas Kemp Crockett, of Coral Gables, FL. Mr. Elliott was a graduate of Stony Point High School, and attended NC State University in Raleigh, NC. He was a veteran of World War II, where he fought with the 10 Mountain Infantry Division in Italy, along with Senator Bob Dole of Kansas. Mr. Elliott was prominent in the ice cream and dairy business in Statesville for over sixty years. Along with his wife, he opened Elliott's Old Fashioned Ice Cream in 1977, and quickly became known as "The Ice Cream Man." Countless numbers lined up for his homemade ice cream, which was known for its fresh, quality ingredients. Elliott's Old Fashioned Ice Cream achieved national prominence when rated Elliott's Banana Pudding Ice Cream as one of the "30 Finest Flavors in the Land", and a national guide, singled out Elliott's as among the best in the U.S. Mr. Elliott was beloved and will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at First Baptist Church at 11 am with Dr. Jeff Porter and Dr. Jack Causey officiating. Burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery prior to the funeral hour. The family will visit with friends following the service.
