George Olaf Nelson, Sr.

February 27, 1932 — January 27, 2019

Mr. George Olaf Nelson, Sr, 86, of Stony Point, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Iredell Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Nelson was born in Newberry, MI on February 27, 1932 and was the son of the late Albert Nelson and Ethel Marble Nelson.  He was a graduate of Newberry High School and he was married to Marlene Gearhart Nelson, who preceded him in death in 2009.

Mr. Nelson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and he was a retired machinist with Clark Equipment.  He spent 10 years of his retirement driving cars for the Statesville Auto Auction.

George was also a farmer. He would come home after a day in the plant and work in his 60 acre field planting Corn or Soybeans.

George was an avid golfer and played as often as possible while his health would allow.  When it became too much, he developed a love for bowling.  His love for his family was the most important part of his life and his absence will be felt for many years to come.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Barb Powers, George Nelson, Jr, Tim Nelson and Ed Nelson, all of Stony Point along with five grandchildren, Jessica, Rick, Phillip, Charles and George, and three great grandchildren, Addie, Everette, and Henry ( Hank), and one on the way.

A celebration of life service honoring the life of George Nelson, Sr, will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2019 in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel.  The family will visit with friends for one hour prior to the celebration.  Military honors will be rendered following the service at Nicholson Funeral Home.
