Fred Harwood Poole passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, at his home in Harmony, NC, surrounded by family and friends. His death followed a brief illness. Mr. Poole was born on October 20, 1928, in Montgomery County, NC, to the late Lindsay Jones Poole and Elizabeth “Molly” Blake Poole. Anne Lundy Poole, his wife of 57 years, survives. Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Virgie Poole, Velma Poole Holt, and Hilda Poole Kennedy; brothers: Lindsay Jones Poole, Jr., William A. “Bill” Poole, and Jerry E. Poole; son-in-law, Thomas W. Sharpe; father and mother-in-law, John Coyte and Nell Norris Lundy; and brother-in-law, John A. Diggs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Poole Sharpe, and son, Fred H. Poole, Jr. and wife, Emily, all of Harmony; his only granddaughter, Laura Sharpe (Brennan) Cass of Statesville; sister, Bertha Poole Slate of Trinity, NC ; also, surviving is Virginia Carbonell (Diego) Fonseca, who came to live with the Poole’s as an exchange student from Colombia and became their daughter, also, surviving are her daughters, Andrea, Laura, and Valeria, of Indianapolis, IN. Fred is, also, survived by sisters-in-law: Jeanne Lundy (Giles T.) McLelland, Linda Lundy Diggs; brothers-in-law: John C. (Martha) Lundy, Bruce (Janice) Lundy, Steve (Jeannine) Lundy; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Fred.” He was a US Army Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict with his tour of duty in Germany. He was a member of the North Iredell American Legion Post 113 where he served with the Honor Guard. Fred was a charter member of the North Iredell Chapter of the Lions Club which was organized in 1972. He was named “Lion of the Year” in 1975. Fred was the owner and operator of Poole’s Barber Shop in Harmony for 58 years. He was an accomplished gardener and farmer of chickens, cattle, and hay. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed teaching young people to fish. Mr. Poole was currently a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was previously a member of Harmony Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon in 1968. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM. Rev. Mike Duncan will lead the Celebration of Life Service to be held in the sanctuary at 4:00. The burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors, conducted by the Honor Guard of North Iredell American Legion Post 113. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family.
