Frances Bagwell Thomas, 78, died Thursday July 27, 2017 at her home. Frances was born December 12, 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the daughter of Allie Frank Thomas and Louise Bagwell Thomas. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Frances graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1957 and The University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1961. She earned her Master of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She became a clinical social worker and counselor working primarily in the Washington, D. C. area as a therapeutic foster care manager at Child and Family Services Agency. She was president of the Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work and also served as First Vice President of Legislative Affairs from 1979-1981. Her role was pivotal in obtaining DC licensure on behalf of the society. She was a strong advocate for clinical social work and her coalition building skills were legendary. Frances was a respected and much loved friend in her profession and in her personal life. She was devoted to her family and her church. In 2016 Frances gave a major gift to First Presbyterian Church for the restoration of its 1925 Casavant Organ in honor of her parents. Her brother Allie Frank Thomas, Jr. preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 30, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church at 2:30. Rev. Stephen Scott will officiate. Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church.
