Mrs. Faye Genevieve Washam Sloan passed peacefully on July 23, 2013, after several years of declining health. Born in Mecklenburg County on June 23, 1919, she was the daughter of Joseph Robert Washam and Mamie Vance Washam. She was a graduate of Davis School of Nursing and was a Registered Nurse. Mrs. Sloan worked in Baltimore, MD, Conway,SC and Winston Salem before returning to Statesville to work as Superintendent of Nurses at Longs Hospital. She was married to the love of her life, Mr. William (Bill) Sloan for 44 years before he passed away in 1991. She is survived by her daughters, Madelyn Rutherford (Richard) and Margaret Barnard (William), both of Statesville. She has three grandchildren, Jon Wm. H. Hill (Daina) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Katy Hill Leischner (Joe) of Mint Hill, NC and Elizabeth Sloan Barnard of Statesville. Memama had three great-grandchildren, Caroline Brooke Hill, Charlotte Genevieve Hill and Isaac William Leishchner. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Joe Washam of Concord and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers, an infant son and a son-in-law, John Hill. Known for her delicious pies, cakes and homemade bread, she was a skilled craft person who enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She also loved to garden and especially liked riding the tractor to the top of the hill to pick blackberries. Mrs. Sloan was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for 66 years. The services will be held there at 740 North Center Street on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:45 am in the Katherine Von Bora Sunday School Class.
