Eugenie Dalrymple Shive Setser, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Gordon Hospice House. She was born on February 6, 1926 in Luebo, Belgian Congo, Africa, to missionary parents, the late Alexander Morgan Shive, Sr. and Jean Belle Shive. She graduated from Central School in the Congo and traveled to the United States during WWII via a Dutch freighter. She attended Queens College in Charlotte, NC and graduated Valedictorian in 1948. Upon graduation from Queens, she married the love of her life, Thomas (Boss) Edgar Setser, who preceded her in death in 2004. She is survived by two daughters, Jean S. Liverman (Craig) of Scotts, Helen Setser Stanfield of Cary; two sons, Frank Setser (Kim) of Scotts, David Setser (Jill) of Clayton, NC; three grandchildren, Thomas Setser (Liz) and Nicholas Setser both of Statesville and Hannah Setser of Clayton; two great grandchildren, Mack and Mary Setser; one brother, Phillip Shive (Marilyn) of Washington State, sister-in-law Peggy Shive of Statesville, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, A.M. (Sandy) Shive, Jr. and Robert Shive. Genie, lovingly called “Ma” by many, was a faithful and beloved member of Concord Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Presbyterian Women’s Circle #2. She was also a member of the Scotts ECA club. She was an avid reader, conqueror of crossword puzzles, and a loyal Jeopardy fan. She was a lifelong NC State Wolfpack follower and cheered on the Atlanta Braves. She was fondly referred to as the “Queen of Scotts” by the former WSIC broadcasters as she was a daily caller and winner of many weekly contests. Genie was blinded by retinitis pigmentosa in early adulthood, but in spite of this, she was defined by her independence, generous spirit, intelligence, wisdom, and strong faith in God. An inspiration to all who knew her, Genie gave many the ability to see the best in themselves. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00pm on Monday, June 19th at Concord Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating (3867 Taylorsville Hwy, Statesville, NC 28625).
