Dorman Lee Barker, 78 of Statesville, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Gordon Hospice House. Dorman was born in Iredell County, the only son of the late Robert Lee and Edna Messick Barker on December 7, 1935. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Kerley. Dorman was employed for 35 years with Southern Screw Company, and an additional 25 years at the Statesville Record and Landmark. He also faithfully served as a volunteer with Trinity Fire Department for more than 25 years. He is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Judy Carpenter. Dorman and Judy were blessed with two children; son David Lee (Linda) Barker and grandson, Robert Lee Barker, and daughter La-Donna B. Poplin and grandson Wesley Poplin. On June 1, 1975 Dorman married Katie Kinder Bennett. Along with Katie he gained her big family consisting of Robby and Debbie Bennett and their children, Ben, Nick (wife Candice and great-grandson Jeremy), Hope Bennett, Erica Whitley and Nick Whitley, Mike and Donna W. Bennett and their children, Katie (Sean) Garrity, Andrew and Will Bennett (fianc�e Mary Chandler Armistead), Steve and Beverly H. Bennett and their daughters, Stephanie and Ashley (Geoff Wike), Marvin and Carol L. Bennett and their children, Kate and Sam. Dorman was fortunate to have a very attentive and loving extended family who also survive; Ken and Cindy Kress and their sons Kenny (Christy) and Benji (Mischele), his goddaughter Bailey Kress and godson Raidan Beckham, two nieces and four nephews. The family received friends in the commons area of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Sunday afternoon May 4 , from 2:00 to 3:45 PM. A celebration of Dorman's life followed in the church sanctuary at 4:00 PM. with Reverend Robert Livingston, Reverend Dr. J.B. Parker Jr. and Reverend Danny Leonard officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Danny Eudy, Bill Little, Roy Beckham, Jay Stewart, Gene Houpe, and Dwight Curley. Honorary pallbearers were Doug and Donald Neely and the members of Trinity Fire Department. David Barker, son of Dorman, invites all friends to gather 10:00AM, Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Coffee House on Hwy 115 in Statesville to celebrate the life of Dorman Barker. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, N.C., 28625 along with Wesley Memorial Church.
