Mr. Donald Gibson Sowers, 78, of Statesville, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Gordon Hospice House. Mr. Sowers was born March 30, 1934 in Iredell County and was the son of the late Carl Sharpe Sowers and Pearl Mills Sowers. He attended Cool Springs Elementary, was a graduate of Statesville High School and attended Mitchell College. On June 10, 1956, he married Alison Campbell Sowers, who survives. He was retired after 42 years from J.C. Penny Co. where he worked in management. Mr. Sowers was a charter member of Covenant ARP Church where he served as an Elder, Clerk of the Sessions, was a member of the choir and a member of the Gaither Bible Class and was also a member of the Civitan Club. He enjoyed wood carving, was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and camping. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sowers was also preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Sowers (Iris) and one sister, Lorene Jano (Bernard) Along with his wife, Alison C. Sowers of the home, Mr. Sowers is also survived by one daughter, Karla Cobb (John) of Ball Ground, GA, one son, Michael Sowers (Beverly) of Statesville; one grandson, Blake Sowers of Statesville and one granddaughter, Bridget Merritt (Adam) of Troutman. He is also survived by one great-grandchild, Karlyn Betts of Troutman along with two sisters, Frances S. Moore and Joyce S. Kunkle (Bernard), both of Statesville along with several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, July 6, 2012 at Covenant ARP Church with Rev. Jeffrey Jacobs and Rev. Robert Brawley officiating. Burial will be prior to the memorial service at 10:00 am in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends following the memorial service in the church. The Twin Oaks Senior Golfers will serve as honorary pallbearers.
