Dr. Charles Evan Parkin, MD, 84, of Statesville, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Dr. Parkin was born in Lake City, AR on April 2, 1934 and was the son of the late Claude Parkins and Jewel Bowman Parkins.
He graduated high school in Memphis, TN, attended the University of Tennessee before graduating from Memphis State University. He received his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Tennessee Medical School. Dr. Parkin was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War and was also stationed in Germany.
Dr. Parkin worked as an Anesthesiologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem from 1967 until 1977, then at the University of Tennessee from 1977 until 1979. He went on to work with Iredell Memorial Hospital as a M.D. from 1979 until his retirement in 1999.
In November of 1960, he married Martha Anne Scarborough Parkin, who survives.
Dr. Parkin was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Statesville Country Club where he eagled every hole on the course which included many holes-in-one.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Parkins.
Along with his wife, Dr. Parkin is survived by one son, Jeffrey Scott Parkin (Terry Jo) of Newbern, NC, and one daughter, Kelly P. Smith (Wayne) of Lexington, NC along with four grandchildren, Jonathan Parkin of Winston Salem, Tracy Parkin of Thomasville, NC, Christopher Young and Amanda Smith, both of Lexington, NC. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Kamden Parkin, Brayden Fowler, and Carmen Young and one sister, Sonya Womack of Arizona.
The family will visit with friends on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home. A private graveside funeral service with full military honors will be in the Westlawn Gardens of Memories in Clemmons, NC.
