Carolyn Sue (York) Moore

Carolyn Sue York Moore of Harmony passed away on July 30, 2015. She was born December 9, 1934 in Davie County at her Godbey grandparent’s home, because their home on the York farm in the Clarksbury community was not completed.. She grew up on the farm and was the eldest daughter of the late Horace Buford York and Clara Mae Godbey York. Survivors include her husband, Robert Burl Moore of the home, Son-Wayne Moore, (wife Jennifer), of Gold Hill, NC,   daughters - Gail Nellis (husband Teddy) of Statesville, Kathy Helgeson (husband Baird) of St. Paul, Minnesota. Her five grandchildren are Bradley Moore of California Md., Heather and Brian Nellis of Statesville, Grayson and Zachary Helgeson of St. Paul, MN. She is survived by brothers, Calvin York (Ann) of Olin, Horace York (Joan) of Winston Salem, Bill York (Helen) of Harmony. She is survived by sisters, Ann Lowe (John) of Mooresville, Elaine Shuping (Doug -”Cooter“) of Salisbury, Denise Cline (Bob) of Statesville. She is further survived by 11 nieces and nephews. On April 18, 1954 she was married to Robert Burl Moore of Olin. She graduated from Harmony High School, class of 1953. In December of 1957, she was hired by Hunt Manufacturing Company as secretary to the purchasing agent.  She held this position until 1979 when she was promoted to Payroll Supervisor and was responsible for payrolls and payroll tax related reports for all of Hunt’s locations. She held this position until her retirement in 1998 at which time payroll was outsourced.  She was a Certified Payroll Professional and a member of the American Payroll Association. In 1982, she was invited to join The Statesville Business and Professional Women’s Organization, and served as chairman of the various committees until she became president in 1990.  She enjoyed getting to meet the women and making new friends during the years she was a member. She was a member of the Civinette Club until it disbanded. She was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on many of the church committees, singing in the choir and teaching children’s Sunday School. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, receiving a Life Membership Pin and was a  member of the Mary Martha Circle.  In 2015 she was honored with Lay Person of the Year for Wesley Memorial. She organized the Harmony Friends of the Library when the Harmony Library was built, serving as Chairman until January 2014 when she had to retire.  She was a member of the Clarksbury ECA.  She served a two-year term on the Harmony Town Board. Her hobbies were her family, reading, crossword puzzles, needlepoint, working in her flowers and traveling with Robert and friends. Carolyn was a wonderful mother who taught her children the attributes of dignity, hard work and attention to detail.   A Celebration of Life for Carolyn is planned on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at 3:00 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Statesville with the Rev. Dr. Chris Fitzgerald and the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 in the parlor of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Harmony Cemetery, Harmony NC following the service. Pallbearers are: Bradley Moore, Brian Nellis, Byron York, Neil Moore, Chris Lowe, and Jim Agner, III. The family wishes to thank Dr. Grimm and staff for their care during Carolyn’s illness and Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County Staff for their care in her final days.
