William Burl Johnson departed this earthly life on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. He now resides in Heaven. He was born in the New Sterling community of Iredell County on December 20, 1925 to James Boyce and Victoria Alexander Johnson. He was a graduate of Scotts High School class of '42. After school, he joined the Army and served under General George S. Patton, Jr. in WWII during the European Conflict. After his tour of duty in the Army, he returned to Statesville and worked at J.C. Penney Warehouse. In 1960 he moved to Charlotte to pursue a career in sales. He retired from sales in 1990 and worked for City Chevrolet until he was 79. He remained in Charlotte until his death. He was a member of Craig Avenue ARP Church in Charlotte. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, J.B., Jr and Leroy. He is survived by his son, Gordon Bryant Johnson and his fianc�, Darlene Hutchins of Lewisville, NC, two grandsons, Mitchell Bryant Johnson and wife Suzanne, Richard Scott Johnson and wife Cristina along with two great-granddaughters, Sarah and Isabel Johnson, all of Belmont, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Kathleen Johnson King, one cousin, Betty Johnson Godfrey, both of Statesville; one nephew, Fred R. King of Statesville and one niece, Karen King Graves of The Villages, FL. A graveside funeral service with full military rites for Mr. Johnson will be conducted in the New Sterling ARP Church Cemetery at 11:00 am Saturday, January 4, 2014 with Rev. Nathan Frazier and his lifelong friend David Sides officiating.
