Bill Cloaninger Smith, 88, of Troutman went to his heavenly home on April 1, 2012 at Gordon Hospice House. He was born on August 23, 1923 in Troutman to the late Barron Pressley Smith and Carrie Lucinda Cloaninger Smith. Bill was a farmer most of his life on land near his childhood home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Otha (Smutt), Lathan (Jiggs), Boyce (Cotton), Robert (Jack) & Banks; his sisters, Nannie Dee Brawley, Rachel Smith, Sara Brown, Mary Wood, & Maxine West and a granddaughter, Carrie Margaret Cardwell. Bill was a WWII veteran and served his country proudly in the Pacific aboard the USS Suffolk from June 1944 until July 1945. He was honorably discharged from the USS Navy in February 1946 and he returned to Troutman. March 1, 1946 he married Mildred Maxine Watts, who survives. He is also survived by his children, Bill Smith (Linda) of Statesville, Ronnie Smith, Sara Cardwell (James), and Janet York of Troutman; his grandchildren Ben Smith (Kim) of Loganville, GA, Carolina Morgan Booker Smith of Statesville, Emily York Smith (Derrick) and Kristi Lee Travis (Adam) of Troutman, his great-grandchildren, Kamryn and Malachi Smith and Lilee Travis of Troutman. Bill is also survived by grandchildren Hayley Henderson (Jesse), Allen Henderson (Lauren), Stephany Shayeghi (Neel), Thomas Henderson, Mike Cardwell, John Cardwell, Chris Cardwell, Mark Cardwell (Cheree), Brett Cardwell (Amanda), Brad Cardwell (Dawn) and great-grandchildren Nessa Moore, Ava, Farah, and Maryam Shayeghi, Gracen, Garret and Gavin Cardwell and Reid, Grantt, Davis, and Anna-Elise Cardwell. He was a lifelong member of New Perth ARP Church in Troutman and burial will be in the church cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Sherer and Rev. William Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:45-2:45 at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Debbie King and Louise Yates for their loving care of their dad.
