Bettie Buchanan Chambers, 85, of Statesville passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Gordon Hospice House. Bettie’s grandparents emigrated from Norway and eventually moved to Columbus, Georgia where she was born on February 18, 1934 to the late James Lewis Buchanan and Aasta Krogland Buchanan.
Bettie moved to Statesville at 14 years of age and met the love of her life, Carl Chambers, at Statesville Senior High School. On February 10, 1951, she married Carl and they shared over 61 years of marriage before his passing on April 26, 2012. Bettie and Carl were a true partnership in life and in business. They operated Chambers Launderette for 19 years, started Chambers Well Drilling in 1956, and in 1972 started selling utility buildings. As her sons grew up and worked in the business, the name was changed to Chambers and Sons, Inc. They drilled wells over Iredell County for more than 50 years. For over 40 years, they sold and delivered thousands of utility buildings. Bettie was secretary/treasurer of the company and her smiling face was always a fixture whenever you did business with them.
She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, and after her health began to fail, she attended Forest Park Presbyterian with her son Mark and wife, Deena when she was able.
Bettie and Carl were actively involved in the Statesville High School Class of 1951 reunions and luncheons, and in charge of the Class Scholarship for many years. They so enjoyed being with their classmates.
Bettie played bridge and canasta for many years with her friends before her health no longer allowed her to continue. She was a talented crafter, in crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint. She made many items for her home and grandchildren when they were born.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Jerry Chambers (Elizabeth) and Mark Chambers (Deena), both of Statesville; three grandchildren whom she adored, Mindy Chambers of Charleston, S.C., Caron Chambers of Statesville; and Jay Chambers (Alex) of Raleigh, N.C. She is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank her wonderful caregivers, who were so patient and kind to Bettie, which allowed her to stay in her home. Marge Miller, Doris Church, Gloria Anderson, Dianne Engles, and Sandy Garges who became part of our family as well.
There will be a Memorial Service held at 12:00 Noon, Friday, June 28, 2019 at Forest Park Presbyterian Church with Rev. Scott Jeffreys officiating. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall. A private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625. Online condolences may be made to the family at
