Mrs. Bernice Vernon Wood, 88, of Statesville, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Gordon Hospice House. Born in Stokes County on May 17, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Albert C. Vernon and Nina Steele Vernon of Sandy Ridge, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bynum M. Wood whom she married on March 24, 1948, a son Vernon Wood, and siblings: Elsie Vernon, Doris Brown, Elneese Oakley and Bud Vernon. Mrs. Wood was a member of First Baptist Church of Statesville, where she was also a member of the Ambassadors Sunday School Class. She enjoyed flowers and vegetable gardening and selling her wares at the farmer’s market. The family wishes to express gratitude to all of Mrs. Wood’s caregivers over the years with special thanks to her caregivers of nine years, Betty Dancy, Jane Forsyth and Sandy Kyles. Additional thanks are extended to her Hospice nurse Lamenda Cashion for twenty months of compassionate, loving care she provided. Survivors include a son, Ben Wood and his wife, Susan of Statesville, granddaughters, Elizabeth Hoops (Todd) of Statesville and Melissa Wilson (Chris) of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are great grandchildren: Hailey Wilson, Anna Hoops, Sam Hoops and one great grandson is expected in July. Also surviving is a brother R.J. Vernon (Linda) of Roanoke and a Sister-In-Law, Earlene Wood of Rural Hall, N.C. along with numerous nieces and nephews. Services celebrating Mrs. Wood’s life will be conducted at 11:00 Wednesday at Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nelson Granade officiating.
