Glen Turk "Bear" Carver, 73, of Statesville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 11, 2014, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Carver was born in McDowell County, WV on November 25, 1940 and was the son of the late James B. and Sarah Elizabeth Cline Carver. Known by many as Bear, he worked for many years driving people around in Statesville while working for local taxi companies. In addition to his parents, Bear was also preceded in death by a son, Anthony G. Carver along with three brothers, Richard, Charles, and Douglas Carver and one sister, Patricia Sue Barber. He is survived by his companion of 22 years, Mary J. Compton of the home, five daughters, Mary E. Carver of Charlottesville, VA, Sheila M. Matney (Steve) and Teresa L. Justice (Estil), both of Panther, WV, Lisa A. Austin (John) of Mineral, VA, and April H. Carver (Daniel Sanchez) of Statesville. He is also survived by one brother, Don Carver (Jean) of Redding, CA, and two sisters, Phyllis Richard of Virginia Beach, VA and Wilma Ann Khale (James) of Bluefield, WV. He is further survived by one grandson, Kristopher G. Thodos who is stationed in the U.S. Army in Hawaii and three granddaughters, Gabrielle P. Russell of Ruther Glen, VA, Hannah N. and Sarah E. Matney of Panther, WV, and one great-grandson, Malachi Russell of Ruther Glen, VA. A gathering of friends to honor Mr. Carver is scheduled from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the home of Bear Carver and Mary J. Compton. Online condolences can be made to the family at
